You’ll find all these and much more in Northwest Montana’s Flathead Valley and Bigfork, Montana. Come visit and you’ll see why many visitors return here year after year.

The “Flathead,” as locals call the valley, lies just west of the Continental Divide in northwest Montana. Here you’ll find the gateway to Glacier National Park, and the home of both Whitefish Mountain Resort and Blacktail Ski Area. Flathead Lake, the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi, is also among the cleanest large lakes – perfect for sailing, cruising, swimming, and fishing.

A surprisingly mild climate invites you outside all year. Typical winter temperatures are in the 20s and 30s. Summer temperatures usually range from the 70s to low 90s.

3. Brief History and Background of Bigfork, Montana
Bigfork, Montana got its name from its located on the fork of Swan River. It has had a post office since 1901. (from Cheney’s Names on the Face of Montana, Mountain Press Publishing Company) Bigfork was founded in 1901 about the time the hydroelectric plant at the mouth of the Swan River was built to supply electricity for Kalispell. The electric company is still here where water from the river is diverted to a higher level then dropped through turbines to generate power.

Bigfork has been distinctly honored with designations in the following publications: The 50 Great Towns in the West, 100 Best Small Art Towns, The Great Towns of America, and National Geographic Guide to Small Towns Escapes. Bigfork is an exceptionally lovely, upscale, year-round resort village that is brimming with art galleries, fine restaurants, golf, high-end boutiques, and live theater.

Bigfork is located on the Flathead Lake in the center of an outdoor enthusiast's paradise with plenty fishing, boating and hiking opportunities to enjoy. Located in the community is the impressive and challenging Eagle Bend Golf Course.

The Bigfork Summer Playhouse is considered one of the Northwest's finest repertory theaters. It is located in a modern, air-conditioned theater structure seating 450 people. The fast-paced, light singing, dancing and acting provide great family entertainment. The Broadway musicals which are presented Monday through Saturday feature some of the most outstanding young talent in the country. Past performances include Fiddler on the Roof, My Fair Lady, Sound of Music, Annie Get Your Gun and The Music Man.

Bigfork is the gateway to the 91-mile Seeley-Swan Highway, MT 83. ‘The Swan' runs between two majestic mountain ranges, past pristine lakes and heavily wooded slopes.

Tourism and cherry orchards now support the local economy.

4. Bigfork Montana Vacation Rentals
Bigfork quite aptly calls itself the Village by the Bay, as it is sheltered in a bay on Flathead Lake, right where the Swan River joins the Lake. It has great Flathead Valley views of mountain ranges that drop off dramatically into the Lake's edges.

Bigfork Montana is a very popular area in the Flathead valley of Monata - with in state and out of state tourists frquenting the area. In summer the number swells still more with visitors who have come to enjoy its art galleries, live theatre, sidewalk cafes, and restaurants.

Despite the beginnings of urban sprawl, Bigfork retains a genteel, village atmosphere closer to the Lake. Here, there are no shopping malls or franchise businesses, rather unique food establishments and galleries. You will find much art with a Western theme, including excellent sculpture work, which is supported by two bronze foundries in the region. Contemporary art is also starting to make a breakthrough. Local artwork can be found in nontraditional venues such as the Bigfork Inn, and the main art event is the Bigfork Festival of the Arts the first weekend in August. Great vacation rental condos can be found at the Bigfork Montana vacation rentals site.
